Friday of the Third Week of Easter
 #Flashback
Kahleen Tuite, OP

On a study abroad trip to Rome this March one of our first stops was to the Mamertine Prison.  It is believed to be the place both St. Peter and St. Paul where held captive prior to their deaths. The prison cell is dark, and damp and it’s hard to imagine any kind of life existence in this place. For me, the word cruel, came to mind.

There are a few images in today’s reading from Acts that also give reflection to the word cruel:

‘Saul, still breathing murderous threats against the disciples of the Lord...’

‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

The story of Saul’s conversation of heart is well documented and known. Saul is ultimately chosen by Jesus to be his ‘instrument’ in proclaiming His message to Gentiles, Jews, and Kings.

I find it ironic that I stood in the prison where Paul resided after fulfilling his role as God’s instrument and experienced sorrow at the way he was treated in this cruel space unfit for human dwelling.

Then I read today’s scripture and experience sorrow and anger at the cruel, hate filled pursuits of Saul against the human dignity of those who embraced the message of Jesus.

I think this is a human tension that everyone of us can relate. It’s a message that challenges us to passionately embrace, and live, dying on the cross for our sins, and the resurrection of forgiveness and freedom. It is the daily ‘Passion’ of living this human life.

In the movie, ‘Paul, Apostle of Christ,’ Paul is sharing the story of his conversation and preaching of Jesus with Luke. One of the most profound images is a consistent flashback scene. The scene is of men, women, and children peacefully walking. As one listens to the story, you come to realize these are the faces of the people Saul cruelty tortured and killed. These people never left his mind or heart.

The daily ‘Passion’ of living this human life with the promise of redemption.

Do you believe?

I do!

Alleluia
